Yankees fail, THEEEEE Yankees fail!!
For the last month, we heard that Cliff Lee was being courted by the Yankees and Rangers. It was supposed to be easy for the Yankees. They offer more money than the other teams and they get their man. But Mr Lee proved to be a formidible opponent. He wanted 7 years, they offered him 7 years. He wanted to get paid, and they offered him $150 million. An offer that is too good to be true. 99% of the players in baseball would have excepted that offer. Cliff Lee did not. The Rangers, the team he was traded to in July, offered a 6 year deal with an option for a 7th that was around $138 million. He didn't except that offer either. Instead he chose to return to the team that traded him almost a year ago to the day. Thats right, he chose Philadelphia. A 5 year deal, with an option for a 6th, with a price of $120 million. He took less money to come to a place he really never wanted to leave. He returns to Philadelphia where he is being welcomed with open arms. Now the Phillies have arguably the best front 4 starters in the history of baseball with Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. To further the bad off-season for the Yanks, Jayson Werth signed with Washington and Carl Crawford signed with rival Boston before Lee decided to come back to Philly. Sure the Yankees signed Russell Martin and Pedro Feliciano, but its rare to see the Yankees not sign a big name free agent. I guess not everyone wants to sign in New York.
